Preparing Students for Life after Graduation

The decision of going to college or entering the workforce directly upon graduating High School is a significant one. In fact, it is a choice that should be made based on careful consideration of various factors. Iowa Choice Charter School prepares Students for both pathways as we believe that there is no right or wrong path to take, only the path that each Student individually feels suits their personal goals and aspirations!

By outlining the key considerations we review when guiding Students in the direction of either path within this Blog Post, we are providing insight into our process. And, we have the opportunity to share the focal points we feel are necessary to our individualized counseling sessions as we work alongside Students to create their personalized, future-focused plans.

Key Consideration: Career Interests including Entrepreneurship, General Skills and Training

It’s important for Students to consider and consistently revisit their thoughts surrounding the career path they wish to pursue. Some professions require a college degree, while others may value practical experience and training on a particular job which can lead to career advancement therein.

We encourage Students to consider whether or not gaining work experience immediately after High School aligns with their goals. We also encourage them to explore all educational options including, but not limited to, attendance at a university, vocational/technical schools, apprenticeships, and short-term online courses. Additionally, if Students are interested in starting their own business or pursuing an entrepreneurial path, they should evaluate whether or not a college education is essential for their specific business goals. Overall, Students should assess the skills required for their desired career as well as the specific educational requirements and/or certifications needed within.

Key Consideration: Market Demand

Researching the demand for professionals in a Student’s desired career field is highly important to the conversation of the choices made as they continue on after graduating High School. We partner with Students to review job market trends and growth prospects. Again, while some industries set the standard of earning a degree in higher education as a prerequisite, others may prioritize firsthand experience. So, Students should compare potential earnings in their chosen field with and without a college degree.

Key Consideration: Financial Responsibilities and Debt Management

There are financial obligations associated with preparation for life after earning a High School diploma regardless of how a Student chooses to move forward. In the realm of education, we work with Students to estimate the cost of attending a college or university including application fees, tuition, accommodations, and other expenses. We also work with them to research part-time jobs, scholarships, grants, and financial aid opportunities that can help offset these costs in addition to reviewing the availability of student loans. As it relates to entering the workforce, we help Students determine the cost of necessities required to do so such as transportation, proper attire, meeting insurance coverage stipulations, and more.

Iowa Choice Charter School wants all Students to be set up for success! This is why we make it a point to discuss minimizing debt and managing it as effectively as possible throughout the next stages of their lives. It is also important to us that we cover the topics of maintaining a healthy credit score and having good financial habits.

Key Consideration: Personal Growth

Personal growth can occur in a college or university environment and upon taking on the role of an employee. College can offer a unique opportunity for self-discovery, exposure to diverse ideas, and the development of critical thinking skills. And, immediately becoming involved in a work environment can pave the way for strong time management and interpersonal skills to develop, alongside promoting the development of greater self-efficacy overall.

Key Consideration: Long-Term Goals

At Iowa Choice Charter School, we regularly invite our High School Students to reflect on their long-term career and life goals, especially as they look ahead towards graduation. Pursuing a college education could be recognized as an investment in future opportunities. On the other hand, entering the workforce can provide valuable networking opportunities that can be beneficial for future career advancement.

Contemplating long-term goals goes hand in hand with understanding the personal circumstances that may be present for Students such as family commitments, health considerations, and other responsibilities. This is because these circumstances can influence the feasibility of attending college or working directly after High School. With that in mind, conducting thorough research, seeking advice, and carefully weighing the pros and cons of all factors connected to each option before making a decision is imperative. And, shifting long-term goals to accommodate current circumstances is not a bad route to take either!

Ultimately, the decision a Student makes as far as how they choose to continue on in their professional journey after earning their High School diploma is theirs. However, at Iowa Choice Charter School, we feel that the decision made should match their individual goals, values, and circumstances.
