Acknowledging and Managing December Distractions

For many, December represents completion! While one year is drawing to a close, opportunities for new beginnings in the upcoming year start to come into focus. With that in mind, the month of December is often deemed responsible for bringing feelings of excitement and optimism along with it. However, it can also bring its fair share of distractions.

A distraction is anything that prevents an individual from giving their undivided attention to a task, responsibility, or endeavor that is necessary to their achieving success. Although everyone is held accountable for their performance here at Iowa Choice Charter School, we remain aware of the fact that December distractions are inevitable. And, we believe that with awareness and proactive strategies, our Students, Educators, and Leaders can navigate them successfully.

This Blog Post is dedicated to those pesky December distractions that can get in the way of us ending the year strong! Examples of distractions that may arise throughout this month for our Students, Educators, and Leaders are provided below in conjunction with solution-oriented strategies.

Too Tired to do what is Required | End-of-Year Fatigue

Academic breaks are often scheduled during the month of December and can make it easy for fatigue to set in. With a pause in education-related commitments just up ahead, Students may find it challenging to maintain motivation, Educators might feel the weight of grading and assessments in a timely manner, and Leaders may be immersed in administrative tasks as they focus on closing out the calendar year properly and with excellence. All of this can lead to what is known as end-of-year fatigue which can result in decreased efficiency and attentiveness, affecting the quality of learning, teaching, and decision-making.

If there are Students, Educators, and Leaders experiencing end-of-year fatigue at Iowa Choice Charter School, we remind them to prioritize taking breaks. Short breaks, even when they are just a few minutes, can help refresh the mind and prevent burnout. Additionally, we know that spending time with peers alongside healthy communication can facilitate stronger relationships, lead to more effective problem-solving, as well as create space for collaboration and delegation to take place. This is why we put forth more energy in this area towards the end of the year through maintaining an increased presence on our Social Media platforms, working to ensure that all Organization-wide messaging is purposeful, and encouraging connection via one-on-one or group meetings.

Well Begun is Half Done | Reflection and Goal Setting

While reflection is essential for growth, the end of the year seemingly prompts us all to reflect on our achievements and shortcomings. This reflective process, combined with the creation of new goals for the upcoming year, can be both empowering and distracting. But, balancing the desire for self-improvement with the immediate tasks at hand requires thoughtful planning.

Future-focused planning is important to us. We know that when our Students, Educators, and Leaders prepare for the future, they are better equipped to handle anything that comes their way later on in life. And, we know that staying concentrated on responsibilities that require attention in the moment is also apart of preparing for the future. Through providing exposure to a variety of time management and prioritization tools, we hope to empower everyone here at Iowa Choice Charter School to tackle what needs to be taken care of now while keeping their sights set on the journey ahead in a way that is realistic and inspirational.

It’s Strictly Business, not Personal (or perhaps it’s both?) | Work-Life Balance

As is typically the case with any other month, December requires finding a balance between all obligations. In the realm of education, Students might be juggling school commitments with part-time jobs, Educators may find themselves caught up in meticulously tracking Student performance while planning holiday festivities, and Leaders are likely going above and beyond to complete management tasks so that they can be fully present with those they are closest to during their break.

It’s imperative to recognize that a lack of balance between personal and professional responsibilities can, unfortunately, hinder the fulfillment of academic and administrative duties. Striking the right balance is crucial to an individual’s overall well-being and safeguarding the well-being of our Students, Educators, and Leaders is at the center of what we do! We promote work-life balance throughout Iowa Choice Charter School and regularly recommend that everyone within our School engage in healthy habits as it relates to this. These habits can range anywhere from ensuring their calendars are not overbooked and overloaded in advance to consistently making time for self-care practices that are meaningful to them.

Making Ends Meet | Financial Stress

Financial stress can be a factor at anytime throughout an individual’s life. And, this stress can be heightened in December because often times, the end of the year brings increased financial obligations. Mental distress caused by monetary concerns can negatively impact Students, Educators, and Leaders. When their mental well-being is compromised due to the presence of gaps in their financial security, this can decrease focus and performance.

The Leaders of Iowa Choice Charter School openly communicate across our Organization in an effort to remain cognizant of any financial stressors that may be contributing to feelings of overwhelm and showing up as a distraction. As far as directly supporting Students, Educators, and Leaders who may be dealing with financial stress, we offer tangible resources to help them navigate their situations on an individual basis.

Under the Weather | Seasonal Changes

December in Iowa means that inclement weather like snowstorms, extreme cold, or other weather-related challenges such as power outages will likely be experienced within our community. This can disrupt normal routines and undermine any operational structure, both personally and professionally.

Through our maintaining a supportive environment where empathy and understanding are at the forefront, especially throughout the winter season, morale is kept high at Iowa Choice Charter School. Plus, a stable environment grounded in positivity lets Students, Educators, and Leaders know that when their capacity to show up for themselves and others has been negatively impacted due to external circumstances, the teamwork of those surrounding them will help move things forward no matter what!

Of course, there are many more distractions that can arise depending on individual circumstances. And, by acknowledging some of the distractions that are often seen within the education community while outlining effective coping mechanisms that can be implemented in the moment, we are showing our commitment to the success of Iowa Choice Charter School as well as our commitment to the betterment of the educational landscape overall.
